For over a century, occlusal recording methods remained largely unchanged. Stuarts gnathograph, and the articulators of Bonwill and Gysi, date back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, yet they would still look familiar to modern-day dentists.
More recently, as digital dentistry has grown, newer methods for recording the occlusion have become available. This talk will first look at the current evidence for the quality of occlusions produced by intra-oral scanners.
Next, the current research at Leeds School of Dentistry into the use of machine learning, mobile phones and simple webcams will be introduced, with the ultimate goal of providing accurate full occlusal recordings without the need to purchase expensive equipment.
Andy initially studied Computer Science in the early 1990s before completing his Dental BDS in 1999. He spent over 10 years in full-time general practice in Cornwall, developing an interest in occlusion and in the digital technologies of that era (such as CEREC red cam). On relocating he took a post at the Leeds School of Dentistry, completing a PhD in digital occlusion.
Now a Clinical Associate Professor in Restorative Dentistry, he is mainly research-based, with a focus on applying novel digital techniques to solve real clinical problems. He leads the digital research group, working on many facets of digital dentistry. He leads a multi-centre clinical trial in 3d printing in dentistry and is the programme lead for the MSc in Digital Dentistry. He has built 3d scanners and written much dental software, mostly aimed at making digital dentistry innovative and affordable. He has published over 20 peer-reviewed articles in the past 4 years on a wide range of digital dentistry topics, has patented digital techniques and has licensed several algorithms to commercial dental companies.
11:30 - 12:00
The lecture will explain what 3D printing is, describe the different technology used in dental 3D printing today, compare some of the most commonly used printers suitable for a surgery, the latest developments in dental 3D printing and discuss the current possibilities in materials, speed and precision.
